The International Union of Railways is observing “International Level Crossing Awareness Day” today i.e., 9th June, 2026. As part of it, South Central Railway is also participating in the global campaign to spread awareness among the road users and promote safe practices at Railway level crossing gates.
With the increase in train services, level crossing gates are required to be closed more frequently to facilitate safe train operations. This often results in traffic congestion and inconvenience to road users. To address these concerns, SCR has taken up elimination of LCs in a phased manner by providing alternative arrangements such as construction of Limited Height Subways (LHS); Road Under Bridges (RUBs) and Road Over Bridges (ROBs) with the co-operation of State Governments. Further, SCR has also been undertaking several measures to improve safety at LCs such as installation of cautionary and signage boards, regular safety checks by Railway officials, sensitization of staff deployed at level crossings, and training of Loco Pilots, Assistant Loco Pilots and all staff involved in train operations on safety procedures at level crossings.
As part of the International Level Crossing Awareness Day campaign, all the three divisions of the zone viz. Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Nanded divisions have organized mass awareness campaigns including Nukkad – Nataks to improve public awareness on the dangers of unsafe behavior at level crossings, special checks at level crossings etc. The zone has also taken up awareness campaign across its social media platforms to reach wider audience on the importance of strictly adhering to safety guidelines at LCs.
It is relevant to mention, SCR was among the first zones to eliminate all the Un-Manned Level Crossing (UMLCs) gates across its entire network in 2018 itself. During the financial year, 2025-26, a total of 65 manned level crossings were eliminated on SCR jurisdiction which earlier included six divisions across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka states. In the current financial year 2026-27, SCR is working towards the elimination of manned LCs on a fast pace across its three divisions i.e., Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Nanded Divisions.
Shri Sanjay Kumar, General Manager, SCR called upon the Road users to be cautious and follow the rules at Railway Level Crossings. He advised the commuters to be alert while driving and not endanger their life or lives of others by overlooking the safety guidelines. The General Manager also advised the officials to continue the same efforts to ensure elimination of manned LCs targeted for the current financial year. The General Manager also instructed the staff to strictly observe all safety protocols at Level crossings until complete elimination of Manned LCS across the zone.
