WPL: All-round DC vanquish Giants ghosts, set up title clash with RCB

0
An all-round performance by Delhi Capitals powered them to their first win of the season against Gujarat Giants, and paved the way for their fourth successive appearance in the Women’s Premier League final. After restricting Gujarat Giants to 168 for 7, they stormed their way to the target in only 15.4 overs, with seven wickets in hand, undoing the efforts of Beth Mooney and Georgia Wareham, the two Australians who reserved their best performance of the season for the critical Eliminator.

The eighth over of the chase began with Lizelle Lee going on the back foot and missing a flick off Wareham. She was trapped leg before. The last ball of that over ended with Shafali Verma inside edging a cut on to her stumps. The double-wicket over threatened to derail Delhi Capitals’ charge, or at least spice up the contest. That, however, wasn’t to be. It was all but an anomaly in an otherwise one-sided run-chase.

Shafali and Lee earlier, and Jemimah Rodrigues and Laura Wolvaardt later combined to make a mockery of Giants’ total on a slow surface where run-making wasn’t easy.

Giants had won all their contests this season batting first, including the two they played against Capitals. Yet, Rodrigues elected to field after winning the toss.

Giants enjoyed yet another high-scoring powerplay, equalling the lowest they had scored in this tournament – 48. However, this time, they had lost three of their top four by then, and firmly pushed on the backfoot. After Devine got off the mark with a boundary that flew over the slips, the early movement had kept their openers under check. One of the outswingers, by Chinelle Henry, took the outside edge to the ‘keeper to send back Devine.

Anushka Sharma and Mooney revived the innings for a brief period, with the latter cutting loose against Kapp in the fifth over, and helping the side pick 17 runs, but Nandni Sharma struck twice in her last over to undo the steady start. A fine clip from Anushka was caught by a diving Henry at mid-on, and Gardner’s thick edge flew to Sneh Rana at wide slip.

A few overs later, Kanika Ahuja was stumped off Minnu Mani, and by the 11th over, Giants were firmly on the backfoot at 71 for 4 – with no boundaries scored for 33 balls.

However, Mooney’s presence loomed large. She got going by stepping out against Shree Charani and slammed her for a boundary. However, she played the secondary role as Georgia Wareham continued to pick the boundary shots. The all-rounder got cheeky with Kapp’s back of a length delivery, cut Nandni’s slower delivery, swept Minnu, and lofted Shree Charani inside out for a six.

Henry’s double-wicket 17th over threatened to pull the momentum back in DC’s favour, but Mooney reserved her best for the last. She took the dominant role in the death overs to lead Giants’ charge. She thumped three boundaries off Henry in the penultimate over, and then finished the innings with a pull for a boundary to take Giants to 168 for 7 – their lowest total against Capitals this season.

As satisfied as the Giants camp was with the revival of their innings, and with the total which was above par on the surface and the standards of the Kotambi leg, it turned out to be too little, as exposed by the early blitz of Lee and Shafali.

It began with Lee pulling Renuka Thakur for a boundary off the second ball. But the real rampage started from the third over, with Shafali taking apart Rajeshwari Gayakwad for three boundaries, and then taking apart Devine for 17 runs. Thereafter, no one was spared. Lee joined the act against Renuka as the pacer was put away for 21, before the South African plundered a boundary and a six off Gayakwad. All of this was happening where the bounce was slightly unpredictable.

Nonetheless, those 20 balls cost Giants 62 runs and totally sucked the contest out of their control. Wareham’s double strike and a couple of quiet overs to follow did allow them to keep the pressure up, but the required rate had come close to run-a-ball. However, Rodrigues and Wolvaardt ensured that there was no way back for them.

The boundaries continued to flow from the second half of the 12th over, with the DC captain taking down her counterpart. Devine, Wareham and Gayakwad couldn’t combine to make much of a difference. There were some slip-ups on the field, there were good efforts, but there was little threat to the class of the DC duo.

Rodrigues, who repeatedly attempted to back away from her stumps and attack Gayakwad, eventually fell in her attempt to go over the in-field. However, by then, the target was in sight, and five balls later, Wolvaardt lofted Wareham over the in-field for a boundary to help seal DC’s place in yet another final.

Brief Scores: Gujarat Giants 168/7 in 20 overs (Beth Mooney 62*, Georgia Wareham 35; Chenille Henry 3-35, Nandni Sharma 2-44) lost to Delhi Capitals 169/3 in 15.4 overs (Lizelle Lee 43, Jemimah Rodrigues 41; Georgia Wareham 2-28) by 7 wickets

New Delhi: Dense Fog Grips Delhi, Low Visibility Procedures In Place At IGI Airport

0

Delhi-NCR remained in the grip of cold and dense fog on Wednesday as winter conditions continued to disrupt daily life across the national capital. Several areas reported low visibility early in the morning, resulting in slower traffic and inconvenience for commuters. The combined impact of cold winds, fog and cloudy skies made mornings particularly harsh for residents.

Amid the prevailing weather conditions, the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport issued a passenger advisory, confirming that Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) were in effect. In an official update, Delhi Airport said, “Low Visibility Procedures are in progress at Delhi Airport. All flight operations continue as normal. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.” While flight operations were largely normal, passengers were advised to stay in touch with airlines for the latest updates due to the possibility of delays.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a latest bulletin, stating that moderate to dense fog is likely to prevail across many parts of Delhi during the morning hours on Wednesday. The sky is expected to remain partly cloudy throughout the day, limiting sunshine.

According to the IMD, while most areas will experience moderate fog, isolated pockets may witness dense fog conditions, especially during early hours. Due to fog and haze, the weather department has issued a Yellow Alert for the entire city. Reduced visibility is expected to impact road traffic during morning hours, particularly on major roads and highways.

Authorities have advised commuters to drive cautiously and maintain safe distances while travelling.

In terms of temperature, Delhi is likely to record a maximum of 21 to 23 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover around 9 degrees Celsius. Over the past few days, minimum temperatures have ranged between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius, remaining below normal and intensifying the chill during early mornings and nights.

The IMD noted that cold conditions are likely to continue over the next few days, with foggy mornings remaining a regular feature. Residents, especially children and the elderly, have been advised to take precautions against the cold and remain cautious during foggy conditions

Amaravathi: CM Chandrababu Naidu For Transforming Andhra Pradesh Into Natural Farming Hub

0

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday directed the officials to initiate action to transform Andhra Pradesh into the largest natural farming hub in the country.

He said 18 lakh farmers have already come forward to practice natural farming across 20 acres in the state.

Addressing a review meeting on agriculture and allied sectors at the Secretariat, the Chief Minister stressed the need to reduce the use of chemical fertilisers.

He stressed the importance of providing certification and traceability facilities to ensure the quality of natural farming products.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), he instructed officials to ensure traceability and certification for natural farming by April this year.

The Chief Minister suggested that agriculture students should practise natural farming themselves.

He announced that training programmes on natural farming would be conducted statewide in collaboration with agriculturist Subhash Palekar. He also stressed the need to increase the share of Andhra Pradesh’s agricultural products in national and international markets.

Recalling that Rayalaseema earlier faced severe water scarcity, he said the issue had been addressed this year through efficient water management, with all reservoirs filled and no shortage of irrigation water.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that trade agreements with the United States and European Union have created more opportunities to increase exports of shrimp, dry chillies, mangoes, rice, and processed foods from the state. The Chief Minister stressed the need to maintain quality.

The Chief Minister directed officials to develop a Cocoa City over 500 acres in the Eluru district, encompassing cultivation, processing, and marketing at international standards. He pointed out the scope for intercropping in mango, cocoa, cashew, and coconut plantations and asked officials to encourage farmers in this direction.

While noting that Andhra Pradesh ranks second in the country in banana production, it lags in exports, CM Naidu called for a stronger focus on boosting exports. He also directed that companies willing to take up large-scale saffron cultivation in Lambasingi under the PPP model, with participation of local tribal communities, be permitted.

The Chief Minister announced that registration of aquaculture activities would be made mandatory. To strengthen the poultry sector, he instructed that egg supply contracts for government schools and anganwadi centres be given directly to farmers. He also emphasised that state policies in agriculture and allied sectors should be aligned with central government policies.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Tuesday successfully demonstrated the Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) technology from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.

The test, conducted at around 10:45 am, marks a significant milestone in India’s missile development programme and places the country among a select group of nations possessing this advanced propulsion technology. SFDR technology is critical for the development of long-range air-to-air missiles, providing enhanced range, speed and manoeuvrability, and offering a substantial tactical advantage to the Indian armed forces.

According to DRDO, all major subsystems of the SFDR system performed as expected during the flight. These included the nozzle-less booster, the solid fuel ducted ramjet motor and the fuel flow controller. After initial acceleration by a ground booster to the required Mach number, the ramjet system functioned seamlessly, validating the design and performance parameters.

The performance of the system was confirmed through flight data captured by multiple tracking instruments deployed along the Bay of Bengal coast by the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur. Senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories, including the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Research Centre Imarat (RCI) and ITR, monitored the launch and test.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and its industry partners on the successful demonstration of SFDR technology. Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman, DRDO, Dr Samir V. Kamat also lauded the teams involved, congratulating them on the successful flight test and the collaborative effort behind the achievement.
