Kerala: Flood alert issues in Madurai as excess water enters Vaigai Dam

Following the arrival ofNorth East Monsoon, the western ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu region have been receiving continuous rains. Water level in Mullaperiyar Dam in Idukki district has reached 140 feet.

The inflow to the dam presently is 2000 cusecs per second and the level is likely to increase due to rains. Hence the water resources department has decided to let out surplus water and accordingly first warning has been issued to those living in the banks.

A flood alert has also been given Madurai as the surplus water will reach Vaigai dam in Madurai.
