As heavy rain lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu, the India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for the next seven days. Regional Weather Department has predicted that heavy rains will continue in the Virudhunagar, Madurai, and Theni districts of Tamilnadu.

According to the prediction, Thoothukudi, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Sivaganga districts will have moderate rains for another 24 hours. Light to moderate rains are predicted over Ramanthapuram, Tiruchirapalli, and seven other districts.

Due to continuous rains, the State Government has declared a holiday in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi for all offices and educational institutions. University examinations have been postponed until further announcement.

The continuous downpour has thrown life out of gear. Papanasam Servalaru dams are at full capacity and the Tamirabharani River has been flowing above the danger mark. Due to water bodies fast filling up, surplus water has been let out giving rise to flash floods.

The State Government has asked the people living in low-lying areas to move to shelters. The District administrations have been asked to take immediate remedial measures to tackle the situation. The NDRF and SDRF teams are kept ready for rescue and relief.
