In Cricket, the opening day of the first test between India and New Zealand was completely washed out due to rain. The match was to be held at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where rains disrupted the play. Day 2 is expected to have an early start with the toss.

India enters the match series following a 2-0 series victory over Bangladesh, while New Zealand comes off a 2-0 defeat in Sri Lanka. Currently, India tops the World Test Championship standings, while New Zealand sits in sixth place.

Rain ensured that no play was possible on the opening day of the first Test between India and New Zealand in Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The play was called off around 14:30 on Wednesday (October 16).

Constant spells of light and heavy drizzle throughout the day ensured that even the Sub-Air system which can soak up to 10,000 litres of water per minute couldn’t be put to much use. The toss has now been scheduled for 8:45 AM on Thursday, with play expected to begin at 9:15 AM, weather permitting.

When rains relented briefly after Stumps were called, the pitch covers were removed for the first time on the day and technical work – that could have eaten up more time tomorrow morning was undertaken. While some grass was sprinkled over wet patches on the square, India captain Rohit Sharma too came over to inspect the pitch.

More spells of rain are expected for the rest of the day in the city with Bengaluru already being under Orange Alert, with schools shut and office-goers advised to work from home.
