All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi published the case study of India’s first successful delivery of a child suffering from anemia with one of the world’s rarest blood group, Rh 17 antigen.

Briefing the media on Tuesday, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Head of Department at AIIMS Delhi, Dr Neena Malhotra said that complications in pregnancy arose due to the incompatibility between the red blood cells of the mother and the baby in the womb, also known as alloimmunisation.

She added that the fetus received 6 blood transfusions through intra utrine transfusion inside the mother’s womb that reduced the chances of hydrops or heart failure.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology professor Dr Aparna Sharma said that the biggest challenge in this case was obtaining the Rh 17 antigen which is so rare that it had to be brought from Japan.
