Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Sunday to review the situation in the petroleum, crude oil, gas, electricity, and fertilizer sectors. The meeting focused on ensuring uninterrupted supply and stable distribution amidst the ongoing crisis in West Asia. The session centered on maintaining a continuous supply across the country without any disruption to essential services, ensuring stable logistics, and streamlining distribution systems.
During the meeting, officials briefed the Prime Minister on the current status of energy availability and the measures being undertaken to ensure India’s energy security. According to sources, the government is closely monitoring global developments and is taking proactive measures to ensure that consumers and industries remain unaffected by fluctuations in international markets.
Efforts are underway to maintain adequate reserves and strengthen supply chains amidst rising geopolitical uncertainties. This review comes at a time when global energy markets remain volatile due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia—a region considered critical for oil and gas supplies.
Concerns were also raised regarding potential disruptions to key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, which handles a significant portion of global energy trade. A day earlier, Prime Minister Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and discussed the regional situation, emphasizing the imperative for peace and stability. He also underscored the importance of keeping international shipping lanes open and secure, warning that any disruption would impact global supply chains.
To reduce its reliance on the Middle East, India has diversified its oil and gas imports, increasing purchases from sources such as the United States, Russia, and African nations like Nigeria. According to officials, approximately 70 percent of India’s oil imports now originate from outside the Gulf region.
The government has intensified efforts to manage LPG supplies—including purchasing Liquefied Petroleum Gas from the United States—to mitigate potential shortages. Nevertheless, concerns regarding LPG availability persist.
