Union Minister K. Rammohan Naidu Says Nagpur Airport Will Emerge As Aerotropolis
Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu today said that, through MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) and cargo hub facilities, the Nagpur airport will reach its full economic potential, transforming Nagpur city into an ”-an airport-centric metropolis -‘Aerotropolis’. The handing over of the Nagpur based Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar international airport to GMR under the PPP model was held in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Minister Naidu was addressing the gathering as the chief guest.
While highlighting the country’s progress in civil aviation sector, K. Ram Mohan Naidu informed that, the number of airports in the country has increased from 74 in 2014 to 165 today. He stated that the cargo hub would facilitate the marketing of Nagpur’s orange produce, handloom products, and electronics in global markets.
On this occasion, Mr . Naidu also launched the Nagpur Airport website (www.nagpurairport.in).
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that, this international airport would aid the growth of the tourism and mining sectors in the Vidarbha region. He urged the Union Civil Aviation Minister to establish air connectivity between Nagpur and cities like Singapore and Dubai. Mr .Gadkari unveiled the logo for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in this program.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis pointed out that significant investments are flowing into the aviation sector from the Air Force’s Maintenance Command and other defense establishments in Nagpur; consequently, the second runway in this airport would transform Nagpur into a ‘Defense Aviation Manufacturing Hub,’ attracting further major investments to the region. Mr.Fadnavis expressed confidence that this airport would serve as a ‘growth engine’ not only for Nagpur but for the entire Vidarbha region and Central India. The Union Cabinet has approved the transfer of Nagpur Airport to GMR company on 13 May of 2026.
