Union Minister Bhupender Yadav Emphasizes Balances Approach Between Economy-Ecology Essential for National Develop

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav has emphasised the need for a balanced approach between economy and ecology for the country’s development. Addressing the inaugural session of a two-day national workshop in Dehradun today on the occasion of International Day of Forests, he said that achieving this balance requires a science-based approach.

In his address, the Minister highlighted India’s commitment and achievements in nature conservation. He stressed the importance of adopting a “nature-first” approach in conservation efforts, stating that only by embracing harmonious coexistence with nature can the Earth remain liveable.

In a tweet message, the Minister also informed that the country’s forest cover has increased by 13,669 square kilometres compared to 2014. The forest area has grown from 701,673 square kilometres in 2014 to 715,342 square kilometres in 2026. He further noted that the country’s carbon sink from forest and tree cover has risen from 1.97 billion tonnes of CO₂ in 2014 to 2.29 billion tonnes of CO₂.

On the occasion of International Day of Forests today, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav urged the citizens to pledge to protect the forests, protecting the life that forests sustain. In a social media post, the Minister said that a forest is not a mere resource to be exploited, but it is life itself to be protected and preserved.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests.

On this day, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organise activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns. The theme of IDF 2026 is Forests and Economies, celebrating the essential roles of forests in driving economic prosperity.
