President of India Appoints Five Judges To Supreme Court After CJI Consultation

Five new judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court, taking the apex court’s working strength to 37 including the Chief Justice of India. In a social media post, Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has appointed five new judges to the Supreme Court.

According to notifications issued by the Law Ministry, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Justice Arun Palli have been elevated as Supreme Court judges. Senior advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana has also been appointed as a Judge in the Apex Court.

The Centre had last month promulgated an ordinance amending the law to raise the Supreme Court’s sanctioned strength to 37 judges from 33, excluding the Chief Justice of India.
