PM Modi Congratulates CWG 2026 Medal Winners

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hosted India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners at his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, and said their exceptional performances would inspire a new generation of athletes.

“Delighted to host our outstanding medal winners from the Commonwealth Games 2026 at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. Heard about their experiences from the Games. Each one of them has made our nation proud through their exceptional performances. Their success will motivate many youngsters,” PM Modi posted on X.

The Prime Minister also shared a video of his interaction with the medal-winning contingent, with the caption, “Always #Cheer4Bharat”.

In the video, CWG gold medallist boxer Sakshi Chaudhary said the athletes were proud and happy to have met the Prime Minister, describing him as “very humble”. Responding to her, PM Modi said, “Jo khelega, woh khilega” (The one who plays, will blossom), and urged people to “Always cheer for Bharat.”

India finished fourth in the overall medal standings at the Glasgow Games with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze.

India’s performance was particularly significant given the reduced sporting programme and smaller contingent compared with the 2022 Birmingham Games. The Indian contingent comprised 122 athletes in Glasgow, against 210 in Birmingham, while 30 of India’s 61 medals in 2022 had come in sports that were not part of the Glasgow programme, including wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey and shooting.

Despite the reduced medal opportunities, India retained its fourth-place position and recorded a strong medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals.

Boxing was among India’s strongest disciplines, with the country winning seven gold and three silver medals. The gold medallists were Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg).

Jadumani Singh (55kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) and Narender Berwal (90+kg) won silver medals. India’s seven boxing golds also marked the country’s best-ever performance by women boxers at the Commonwealth Games.

Judo also produced India’s best-ever performance at the Commonwealth Games, with the country winning four medals — two gold, one silver and one bronze — from its 12 events. This surpassed India’s tally of three medals from the 2022 edition, when it did not win a gold.

Khelo India athletes Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh created history by becoming the first Indian woman and man, respectively, to win Commonwealth Games gold medals in judo.

India also won 10 medals in athletics, including five silver and five bronze. Gulveer Singh became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals at a single Commonwealth Games, taking silver in the men’s 10,000 metres and bronze in the 5,000 metres. He was the only Indian athlete to win two medals at the Glasgow Games.

The Glasgow Games concluded after 11 days of competition, with Scotland handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which will host the centenary edition of the multi-sport event in Ahmedabad in 2030.

The flag and baton were handed over during the closing ceremony to India’s representatives, Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

Ahmedabad will become the second Indian city to host the Commonwealth Games after New Delhi staged the event in 2010.
