India’s hydrogen train features a 10-coach configuration, making it among the longest hydrogen-powered passenger trains developed so far. It is powered by a 3,200 Horse Power propulsion system, making it one of the most powerful hydrogen-powered trainsets in operation. The train is powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology, which converts hydrogen into electricity to propel the train.
The process produces only water vapour as a by-product, resulting in zero carbon emissions during operation. Unlike conventional electric trains, they do not require continuous overhead electrification infrastructure, as electricity is generated onboard through hydrogen fuel cells, making them a clean and efficient solution.
The use of green hydrogen also reduces dependence on electricity generated from fossil fuel-based thermal power plants, supporting India’s transition to sustainable transport. The train is equipped with multi-layer safety systems capable of detecting hydrogen leaks, heat, flames and smoke.
With the introduction of this train, India joins the select group of countries that have operational hydrogen-powered trains. These include Germany, Japan, China and the United States.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed India’s first hydrogen-powered train as a historic milestone, describing it as a landmark day for Atmanirbhar Bharat and the country’s journey towards sustainable development.
Ahead of the inauguration of the country’s first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell-powered train, the Prime Minister congratulated everyone associated with the project.
“Today marks the realization of India’s dream of getting its first hydrogen-powered train. It is a landmark day for Atmanirbhar Bharat and for the country’s journey towards sustainable development. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to everyone associated with this achievement,” PM Modi said in a post on X (Text translated from Hindi).
The Prime Minister also shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam (verse), highlighting the importance of determination and commitment.
“Whether a task is great or small, whatever a person wishes to accomplish should be carried out with complete dedication and renewed enthusiasm; this is the one quality that ought to be learned from a lion,” he said.
India’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat section of the Northern Railway, marking the country’s entry into the next generation of clean rail transportation.
Developed as a pilot initiative, the project combines advanced hydrogen fuel cell propulsion technology with dedicated hydrogen storage, refuelling and operational infrastructure. It is expected to demonstrate the feasibility of hydrogen-powered rail transportation in India while promoting energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable mobility.
The hydrogen train has been developed in accordance with design approvals and technical specifications prepared by the Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO). Designed and developed entirely in India, the project reflects the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to innovation, clean energy and sustainable transportation.
