Hyderabad: CM Revanth Reddy InauguratesTelangana Legislators’ Sports and Cultural Meet

After a long hiatus, the L.B. Stadium—situated in the very heart of Hyderabad—once again served as a vibrant venue for the spirit of sportsmanship. The stadium buzzed with activity and excitement, enlivened by the presence of public representatives. Under the inspiring motto “Fit Leaders – Fit State”—conveying the message that a state remains healthy only when its leaders are healthy—the “Telangana Legislators Sports and Cultural Meet (First Edition)” commenced with immense enthusiasm that prevailed throughout the event.

Chief Minister Sri Revanth Reddy revived a sporting tradition—which had been discontinued for 14 years—for members of the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly, typically held in conjunction with the Budget Sessions. The Chief Minister not only inaugurated the sports competitions but also actively participated in several events alongside his cabinet colleagues and fellow public representatives, thereby exemplifying the true spirit of sportsmanship.

Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukender Reddy, Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, Cabinet Ministers, MLCs, MLAs, and other participants attended the event in large numbers.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister remarked that the L.B. Stadium possesses a rich and illustrious history; indeed, world-renowned athletes have not only competed but also trained on this very ground. He announced that the stadium would be magnificently renovated and upgraded to meet international standards. Furthermore, he stated that the sports facilities located in Gachibowli would be developed into world-class sports complexes at an estimated cost of ₹700 crores.

“We have formulated comprehensive plans to host the 2034 Olympics in Gachibowli,” he added. “We are set to commence the necessary groundwork there within the next three months.” We are taking measures to ensure that, over the next three years, all sporting events are hosted at the Gachibowli sports grounds. We also intend to develop the Begumpet Hockey Ground.

During the 1950s and 60s, India achieved a 4th-place ranking in #Football for the very first time. At that time, seven players representing the team hailed from the city of #Hyderabad. There was a time when sports such as hockey, football, and cricket brought great fame and prestige to our state and city. However, we have since fallen behind in the realm of sports. The government is now moving forward with a firm resolve to revitalize the sports sector by fostering a spirit of sportsmanship among the youth.

Following the formation of Telangana, sports activities had almost completely faded into obscurity. To deliver effective governance, a government must establish clear policies and guidelines. That is precisely why, upon the formation of this people-centric government, we introduced a comprehensive Sports Policy. With the aim of unearthing “gems hidden in the soil”—talents residing in rural areas—we organized “CM Cup” competitions spanning from the village level all the way up to the state level.

Despite possessing a population of 1.4 billion, our country often struggles to even qualify at the entry level in various sporting events. For instance, when South Korea won 30 gold medals at the Olympics, 16 of those gold medals were secured by athletes from their dedicated Sports University. It is a matter that warrants serious reflection from everyone: why do we lack the same level of determination and drive that South Korea possesses?

It was with the specific intention of boosting the spirit of sportsmanship that we invited the global football legend, Lionel Messi, to Hyderabad. The government recognizes and honors students who excel in sports, and we encourage everyone to cultivate a greater interest in athletic pursuits. “You must excel,” he said.

Subsequently, various sports competitions were organized. The Chief Minister personally participated in a football match, infusing enthusiasm among everyone.
