The Government has awarded a total green hydrogen production capacity of 30 Kilo Tonnes Per Annum (KTPA) to four refineries under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), aimed at accelerating the adoption of clean hydrogen in the petroleum and refining sector.
The projects have been awarded under the SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) Mode-2B scheme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. According to details provided by the Government, Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s refinery at Panipat has been awarded a green hydrogen production capacity of 10 KTPA.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s refinery at Bina and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited’s refinery at Vizag have each been allocated 5 KTPA capacity. Numaligarh Refineries Limited’s refinery at Numaligarh has been awarded 10 KTPA capacity.
The projects will be implemented through Build Own Operate (BOO) arrangements by private developers, with project-specific investments being made by the developers. The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to establish India as a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The Government said domestic production and utilisation of green hydrogen is expected to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthen energy security and support India’s clean energy transition.
The initiative is also aimed at contributing to India’s broader net-zero objectives by promoting the use of clean hydrogen in energy-intensive sectors such as petroleum refining. The information was provided by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
