GITAM Hosts Lecture on New Catalytic Click Reactions for a Sustainable Future
Prof.Devalapaly B. Ramachary, Senior Professor of Chemistry, Catalysis Laboratory, and Assistant Director, Institute of Eminence, University of Hyderabad, delivered an insightful guest lecture on “Discovery of New Catalytic Click Reactions for Sustainable Future” at GITAM Deemed to be University, Hyderabad. The lecture was organized by the Department of Chemistry, School of Science.
Prof.Ramachary introduced the audience to the evolution of modern catalysis, highlighting key areas such as asymmetric catalysis, organocatalysis, supramolecular organocatalysis, metal catalysis, and biocatalysis. He explained that organocatalysis accelerates chemical reactions using small organic molecules as catalysts, offering environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives to conventional catalytic processes.
The lecture covered several of his pioneering research contributions, including organocatalytic sequential one-pot reactions, organocatalytic reductive coupling and its applications, the synthesis of 2-alkylidene-1,3-diketones, asymmetric (3+2)-annulation, catalytic asymmetric synthesis of benzobicyclo[3.2.1]octanes, and the development of functionalized 1,2,3-triazoles. He emphasized the significance of these molecules in medicinal chemistry, noting their applications in HIV protease inhibitors, anticancer and anti-tuberculosis drugs, antifungal and antibacterial agents, histone deacetylase inhibitors, and bioorthogonal probes.
Sharing insights from his research journey, Prof.Ramachary stressed that innovative concepts are more valuable than merely publishing research papers. Referring to Nobel Laureate Prof. Morten Meldal, he remarked that original ideas form the foundation of scientific breakthroughs. He encouraged students and young researchers to cultivate the habit of reading scientific literature extensively and to pursue research with curiosity and perseverance.
He inspired the budding scientists to continue their academic journey beyond postgraduate studies, emphasizing that a Ph.D. opens greater opportunities for innovation and impactful research. In an engaging interaction with the audience, he observed that while Indian researchers are exceptionally skilled at improving existing concepts, greater emphasis is needed on original innovation. He also shared thought-provoking reflections, noting that patience had shaped him as both a researcher and a teacher, and that a deeper understanding of chemistry brings greater appreciation and joy in scientific discovery.
The lecture concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which Prof.Ramachary addressed several queries from students and faculty members on catalysis, research methodologies, and innovation in chemistry. Impressed by GITAM’s infrastructure and its commitment to promoting research and innovation, he opined that GITAM has the potential to become like the Scripps Research in California, renowned globally for its excellence in scientific research and innovation.
