Petrol and diesel prices were hiked again across major metropolitan cities on Saturday, marking the third increase in less than 10 days amid continued volatility in global crude oil markets.
In Delhi, petrol prices rose by 87 paise to Rs 99.51 per litre, while diesel prices increased by 91 paise to Rs 92.49 per litre. Mumbai recorded a 90 paise rise in petrol prices, taking the retail rate to Rs 108.49 per litre. Diesel prices in the city increased by 94 paise to Rs 95.02 per litre.
In Kolkata, petrol prices increased by 94 paise to Rs 110.64 per litre, while diesel prices climbed by 95 paise to Rs 97.02 per litre. Chennai also saw a rise in fuel prices, with petrol becoming costlier by 82 paise at Rs 105.31 per litre and diesel rising by 87 paise to Rs 96.98 per litre.
The latest revision follows a similar increase earlier this week. On Tuesday, petrol prices in Delhi had risen from Rs 97.77 to Rs 98.64 per litre, while diesel prices had increased from Rs 90.67 to Rs 91.58 per litre.
During the earlier hike, petrol prices in Mumbai had gone up to Rs 107.59 per litre, while diesel reached Rs 94.08 per litre. Kolkata and Chennai had also witnessed sharp increases in fuel prices earlier this week. Fuel prices in Jaipur had also been revised upward during the previous increase, with petrol priced at Rs 108.91 per litre and diesel at Rs 94.15 per litre after the hike.
Earlier on May 15, the Central government had increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3 per litre across the country. The repeated fuel price hikes come amid concerns over global energy supplies following escalating tensions in West Asia and disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.
Brent crude prices have remained elevated amid the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran, with crude oil reportedly trading above USD 100 per barrel. Despite the global uncertainty, the Indian government has maintained that the country has adequate fuel reserves and there is no shortage of energy supplies.
