Centre Promotes Drone-Based Agricultural Transformation: Massive Surge in Nano-Fertilizer Usage
The government on Friday highlighted a significant rise in the adoption of nano-fertilizers and the growing role of drone technology in transforming agricultural practices across the country.
According to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, cumulative sales of nano-fertilizers have reached 1,593.37 lakh bottles (500 ml each) since their introduction. This includes 1,219.27 lakh bottles of Nano Urea and 374.10 lakh bottles of Nano DAP.
Field trials conducted by institutions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and State Agricultural Universities have demonstrated promising results. Studies indicate that the use of Nano Urea as a foliar spray, along with conventional fertilizers, can reduce urea consumption by 25 to 50 per cent while maintaining comparable yields. In some cases, yield gains of 3 to 8 per cent have also been observed.
Similarly, trials on Nano DAP suggest that partial substitution of conventional phosphorus fertilizers—up to 50 per cent—can deliver comparable crop yields under suitable conditions.
The government said it is undertaking further research to assess long-term effectiveness and optimise usage. A Phase-II study with the National Productivity Council and a five-year network project with ICAR have been initiated to evaluate nutrient use efficiency across different agro-climatic zones.
To address concerns related to inconsistent performance at higher substitution levels, particularly in low-fertility soils, the government is focusing on standardising application protocols and promoting balanced fertilizer use through awareness campaigns and field demonstrations.
Efforts are also underway to improve access to modern application technologies, including drone-based spraying systems and battery-operated sprayers. Nano-fertilizers are being made available through Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samridhi Kendras (PMKSKs), supported by regular supply planning and outreach initiatives such as Kisan Sammelans, webinars and regional campaigns.
Under the Namo Drone Didi scheme, with an outlay of ₹1,261 crore for 2023-24 to 2025-26, the government has facilitated the distribution of 1,094 drones to women self-help groups, including beneficiaries in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Of these, 500 drones have been provided specifically under the scheme. Beneficiaries have been trained at DGCA-authorised centres for drone operations and agricultural applications.
In addition, ₹52.50 crore has been allocated to ICAR under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation to promote drone usage. Between 2022-23 and March 15, 2026, institutions and Krishi Vigyan Kendras have procured 297 drones and conducted over 36,000 demonstrations, covering more than 38,000 hectares and benefiting a large number of farmers.
The government said these initiatives are aimed at improving nutrient efficiency, reducing input costs and promoting sustainable farming practices through technology-driven solutions.
