Centre Approves Export Of Additional 25 Lakh Metric Tonnes Of Wheat: Summer Crop Sowing Covered Over 69 Lakh Hectares

Government has approved the export of an additional 25 lakh metric tonnes of wheat to support farmers and maintain stability in domestic markets. The decision follows a review of production estimates, stock availability, and price trends.

The Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said wheat acreage during the Rabi 2026 season has risen to over 334 lakh hectares, compared to over 328 lakh hectares last year. It said the increase reflects growing farmer confidence, backed by an assured Minimum Support Price and strong procurement systems.

According to the Second Advance Estimates released on the 10th of last month, wheat production for the 2025-26 crop year is estimated at 1202 lakh metric tonnes, indicating a comfortable supply position.

Earlier this year, the Government had approved the export of 5 lakh metric tonnes of wheat products in January, followed by an additional 5 lakh metric tonnes of wheat products and 25 lakh metric tonnes of wheat in February. With the latest decision, a total of 50 lakh metric tonnes of wheat and 10 lakh metric tonnes of wheat products have now been permitted for export.

The Ministry said the move is expected to improve market liquidity, ensure efficient stock management, and prevent distress sales during the peak arrival season. It will also help stabilise domestic prices and boost farmers’ income, while safeguarding the country’s food security.

The Government added that it will continue to take timely and calibrated measures to balance the interests of farmers and consumers, and promote sustainable growth in the agriculture sector.

Summer Crop Sowing Covered Over 69 Lakh Hectares Across India As Of April 17

Summer crop sowing has covered over 69 lakh hectares across the country as of the 17th of this month. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare today released the data of summer crops. Rice has been sown over 30 lakh hectares, while pulses cover 15.47 lakh hectares.

The progress report released by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare shows that Shri Anna and Coarse Cereals were sown on nearly 13.81 lakh hectares. The area sown with Oilseeds crossed over 9.14 lakh hectares.
