TN: Govt forms environmental expert team to examine pollution levels in Kosasthalaiyar River

Former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, drawing the attention of the government to the death of fish in the Kosasthalaiyar river near the Ennore estuary, says, “Fish have been found dead and floating in large numbers in the Ennore estuary area. The fishermen in this region depend on fishing for their livelihood.

Their livelihood has now been severely affected. Fishermen have alleged that the water in the Kosasthalaiyar river has turned yellow due to the mixing of industrial effluents. They have demanded that officials of the Pollution Control Board conduct an inspection. I draw the attention of the government to this issue and urge it to intervene immediately and take necessary action”

The State Government today said that an environmental expert team has been formed to look into the pollution levels in the Kosasthalaiyar near Ennore. In a reply to a call note, the Minister for Environment,

V.K. Rajiv, said that 2150 kilograms of fish in the Kosasthalaiyar had to be disposed of recently because of the pollution in the river. He said that steps have been taken to rectify the pollution-causing agents. The Minister said that research would be conducted and a report would be submitted within ten days.
