To mark the United Nations International Day for Biological Diversity, the Telangana Forest Development Corporation (TGFDC) today organized a massive community-driven seed ball making and distribution program at Dhanvantari Vanam, located within the Botanical Garden in Kondapur, Hyderabad.
The event perfectly aligned with the global 2026 biodiversity theme, “Acting locally for global impact,” by transforming daily morning walkers into active conservationists. Over 80 morning walkers from the Botanical Garden community enthusiastically participated in creating and distributing thousands of seed balls embedded with native tree species, aimed at boosting green cover across the city.
Speaking on the initiative, L. Ranjeeth Nayak, Executive Director, Eco-Tourism, TGFDC, highlighted the long-term impact of community participation. “True ecological preservation begins at the grassroots level. By involving regular citizens and walkers in making seed balls, we are turning local enthusiasm into real, measurable environmental impact. These simple clay-and-soil spheres will help restore local green corridors, proving that small municipal actions are essential to meeting broader global biodiversity goals.”
He further stated that the initiative being organized at Botanical Garden added special significance to the programme, as the garden serves as an important urban green lung promoting biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and nature awareness among visitors. He noted that the lush landscape and rich plant diversity of the garden provide an ideal platform for engaging citizens, students, and walkers in meaningful eco-conservation activities that strengthen the connection between people and nature.
The event witnessed active participation from all the Naturalists of Deccan Woods and Trails, who guided citizens and walkers in the scientific preparation of seed balls to ensure better germination during the monsoon. They also highlighted the importance of seed balls in increasing green cover, supporting biodiversity and promoting natural regeneration of degraded landscapes.
