Hyderabad: GITAM Introduces Minor Programs in B.Tech to Foster Innovation and Interdisciplinary Skills
GITAM Deemed to be University is set to launch Minor Programs alongside core B.Tech degrees from the academic year 2025–26, a move poised to transform the educational landscape by empowering students with interdisciplinary expertise and enhanced career prospects.
Believing in the transformative power of technical education, GITAM aims to drive innovation, address global challenges, and nurture creativity through this initiative. These Minor Programs are designed to complement core engineering disciplines, providing students with additional skills that can broaden their academic and professional horizons.
Addressing first-year B.Tech students, Prof. V.R. Sastry, Director of GITAM School of Technology and Dean, Core Engineering, highlighted the objectives and structure of the new offering. He emphasized that students opting for a Minor Program must complete an additional 20 credits on top of the standard 160-credit curriculum. This entails pursuing five extra subjects (each carrying 4 credits) between the third and seventh semesters, requiring students to dedicate approximately one extra hour per day.
“Students graduating with both a major and a minor degree will have a distinct edge in higher education admissions and campus recruitment,” Prof. Sastry noted. He further explained that the Minor Degree will be available in eight specialized departments: Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Robotics & AI, Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Electronics and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). Each department will offer foundational courses to build cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills.
In response to a student query, Prof. Sastry clarified that pursuing a minor will not impact the student’s CGPA or academic standing, as it is an optional program aimed at enhancing versatility and career readiness.
The session began with a warm welcome by Prof. P. Trinatha Rao, First-Year Coordinator. The event was also attended by K. Manjunatha Chari, Deputy Director – Accreditation and IQES, along with other esteemed faculty members.
GITAM Hyderabad continues its commitment to academic excellence and innovation by providing students with opportunities to evolve into well-rounded engineers prepared to meet the demands of a dynamic global workforce.
