GITAM Celebrates National Mathematics Day with Enthusiasm and Insight

In a vibrant celebration of intellect and creativity, the Department of Mathematics at GITAM School of Science, Hyderabad commemorated National Mathematics Day on December 20, 2024, two days ahead of the official observance on December 22. This event was organized to honor the birth anniversary of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan and to inspire the spirit of science among the student community.

The celebration featured esteemed guest speakers, including the chief guest Prof. Y.N. Reddy (Retd.), NIT Warangal, who delivered an enlightening talk titled “Mathematics: Language of Learning.” He emphasized the importance of motivating the younger generation, stating, “Across the world, Indians are strong in maths, and we need to inculcate this strength in our youngsters. Math is the only language everybody can understand; there is no place or life without maths.”

Dr. Rajesh Kanna from IIT Hyderabad graced the occasion as the guest of honor, engaging students with his fascinating lecture on “How to Count?”. Dr. Kanna highlighted that the foundation of everything rests on mathematics and encouraged students to explore the numerous opportunities available to those with a maths background.

Adding to the event’s significance, Prof. Kolluru Sree Krishna, Dean of Science at GITAM, delivered a virtual keynote address, urging attendees to leverage this occasion to inspire young minds and enhance their problem-solving skills.

Dr. Motahar Reza, Principal in Charge, welcomed attendees, while Prof. K. Maruthiprasad, BoS-Co chair, provided closing remarks, reinforcing the importance of mathematics in everyday life. Faculty and Student Coordinators Dr. D. Mallikarjuna Reddy, Dr. Krishna Kummari, Nanditha & Shazia organized this event.

The celebration included a series of engaging competitions, such as a Quiz, Mathematical Model/PPT Presentations, and more, with prizes and appreciation letters awarded to the winners. Students from Sri Chaitanya Junior College, Rudraram, and Akshaya Junior College, Malkapur, showcased their talents and contributed to the event’s success.

As a hallmark of GITAM School of Science’s commitment to fostering excellence in mathematics, this event not only celebrated a pivotal figure in the field but also aimed to cultivate a passion for mathematics among the youth, ensuring that the legacy of Ramanujan continues to inspire future generations.
