The GITAM School of Science, proudly announces the launch of its B.Optometry Induction Program for the 2024-25 academic batch. The program was virtually inaugurated by Prof. K.S. Krishna, Dean of the School, on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the field of optometry education.

In his address to the incoming students, Prof. Krishna emphasized the vital role of the eye in understanding the ecosystem and the myriad challenges it faces due to environmental changes. “The eye is an essential part of the human body,” he stated, “and as future optometrists, you will not only gain a profound understanding of its functionality but also contribute meaningfully to the field.”

Prof. Krishna highlighted the importance of a solid foundation in physics, particularly optics, for students pursuing optometry. He encouraged them to dive deep into the science behind light properties—reflection, refraction, and diffraction—to unlock new discoveries that could lead to innovations in eye care. “Your knowledge can surpass that of traditional ophthalmologists,” he said, inspiring students to approach their studies with confidence and ambition.

Prof. Shrikant Bharadwaj from LVPEI also welcomed the new cohort and underscored the dual nature of the program, which combines rigorous academic training with essential clinical techniques. He noted that this year marks the 100th anniversary of optometry in India, a profession that has evolved dramatically over the last century. “Optometrists today do much more than prescribe glasses; they are at the forefront of patient care, diagnosing a range of conditions and developing innovative solutions,” he stated.

Prof. Bharadwaj further emphasized the importance of research and innovation within the field, noting that many of the advancements at LVPEI have been driven by optometrists. “You will have opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research and public health initiatives that can profoundly impact communities, particularly in rural areas,” he added.

The induction program also featured insights from Dr. Vijay Kumar of LVPEI, Prof. M. Reza, Incharge Principal of the School of Science, and Prof. T. Vishwam, Head of the Department of Physics and program coordinator. All speakers reiterated the diverse career paths available to students upon completion of their studies, including clinical practice, research, public health, and innovation in eye care.

The GITAM School of Science is committed to shaping the next generation of optometrists, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the pressing challenges in eye care today.
