In cricket, India defeated Sri Lanka in the final T20 International, making a clean sweep of the three-match series. Having already won the first two games comfortably, India went into the third match at Pallekele, high on confidence while hosts Sri Lanka hoped to put on a better performance. Put into bat, India managed to post 137 runs for 9 wickets on a track that was tricky and aiding the spinners.

Chasing the target of 138 runs, Sri Lanka who were cruising smoothly at one stage faltered in the death overs and were restricted at 137 for 8 wickets by Indian spinners, taking the game into the super over. Sri Lanka could only manage 2 runs in the super over. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav hit a four in the very first ball completing the formality of 3 run target. Washington Sundar was named Player of the Match, while Suryakumar Yadav was announced the Player of the Series. The two teams will now move to Colombo for a series of three One Day Internationals. The Indian team will be led by Rohit Sharma in the ODI series.

A third collapse in as many games cost Sri Lanka their chance of avoiding T20I series whitewash as India snatched a Super Over win from the jaws of a certain defeat in Pallekele on Tuesday (July 30).

Put in to bat first after a rain delay, India huffed and puffed their way to a modest 137/9 after the hosts blew away the top-order in the PowerPlay. Contrasting knocks of 43 each from Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis had Sri Lanka cruising in pursuit of the target before the Indian spinners triggered a collapse of 7 for 27 in 26 balls to remarkably tie the game. Having bowled out his frontline spinners, Suryakumar Yadav took a punt on Rinku Singh and himself and defended 9 off 12 balls to force a tie-breaker, which in turn was as one-sided as the first two T20Is.

SUPER OVERSri Lanka could muster only two runs, one of which was a wide from Washington Sundar first-up, in three balls and ended up losing both their batters to big hits. Kusal Perera pulled one straight to deep backward square leg and Pathum Nissanka failed to get the desired elevation on his attempted pull. India needed only three to win and Suryakumar swept the first ball to short fine where a misfield resulted in a boundary and put an end to Sri Lanka’s misery.

Brief scores: India 137/9 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 39; Maheesh Theekshana 3-28, Wanindu Hasaranga 2-29) tied with Sri Lanka 137/8 in 20 overs (Kusal Perera 46, Kusal Mendis 43; Ravi Bishnoi 2-38, Washington Sundar 2-23) – India won the Super Over
