Hyderabad: Careers in journalism focus on skill-based roles; Says former associate editor Somasekhar Mulugu at GITAM

Somasekhar Mulugu, Former Associate Editor & Chief of Bureau of The Hindu Business Line, recently delivered an enlightening talk on ‘Navigating the Ethical Crossroads Journalism Freedom of Expression and Public Interests’ at the GITAM School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The event, organized by the Department of Media Studies and Visual Communications, shed light on the evolving landscape of journalism and the diverse career opportunities it offers.

During his talk, Somasekhar discussed the five phases of journalism, highlighting how the industry has transformed over the years with advancements in technology. From traditional newspapers and radio in the early phases to the emergence of digital media and social platforms in recent years, journalism has continuously evolved to adapt to changing times.

Emphasizing the importance of good writing and speaking skills in journalism, Somasekhar encouraged aspiring journalists to explore content writing and freelance opportunities. He also highlighted the rise of platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, where individuals can showcase their talents and build their own audience without restrictive regulations.

“Success in journalism depends on the ability to express and engage the audience,” said Somasekhar. He advised budding journalists to choose their media based on their skill set and focus on developing their narrative and storytelling abilities.

The event was attended by students, faculty, and industry professionals, with Prof. Sunny Gosman Jose, Director of GSHS, extending a warm welcome to Somasekhar. Dr. Gadagamma Bala Krishna felicitated the guest, while Dr. Gaman Palem, an accomplished Graphic Novelist, coordinated the event and proposed the vote of thanks.
