Hyderabad: GITAM Hosts Talk on ‘Agrarian Relations in Contemporary India’

The Department of Sociology at GITAM School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHS) in Hyderabad today (i.e. Tuesday) organized an invited talk on ‘Agrarian Relations in Contemporary India’. The talk, given by Dr. Madhura Swaminathan, Professor & Head of the Economic Analysis Unit at the Indian Statistical Institute, Bengaluru, focused on the complex nature of agrarian relations in rural India, with a particular emphasis on the changes observed in Tamil Nadu in recent decades.

During the talk, Dr. Swaminathan highlighted the importance of understanding the various classes that exist within the rural economy of India, including landlords, peasants, and agricultural workers. She emphasized the need to recognize the significant local variations that exist within different regions of the country, and the impact of historical and economic conditions on agrarian class relations.

In addition to the talk by Dr. Swaminathan, the event also featured the release of the book ‘Tribe-Class Linkages: The History and Politics of the Agrarian Movement in Tripura’, authored by Dr. Saqib Khan, Assistant Professor of Sociology at GSHS. The book provides a historical study of the development of agrarian class relations among the tribal population in Tripura.

Dr. Swaminathan’s talk sparked insightful discussions among faculty members and students, with a focus on issues such as rural credit, land ownership, and the impact of capitalism on rural India. Dr. Khan shared his research journey and the process of writingthis book along with its brief summary.

The event was organized by Prof. Sunny Gosman Jose, Director-GSHS who welcomed the guests and introduced to the audience. Dr. Roma proposed the vote of thanks at the conclusion of the event.
