Hyderabad: A Talk on Climate Change and Elections: Prof. D. Parthasarathy IIT Bombay at GITAM
On March 21, 2024, Prof. D. Parthasarathy, Professor of Sociology at IIT Bombay, delivered a thought-provoking talk on ‘Climate Change, Communities, and Electronics’ at GITAM School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHS) in Hyderabad. The Department of Sociology arranged this enlightening event.
During his presentation, Prof. Parthasarathy highlighted the dangerous and widespread disruption in nature caused by human-induced climate change, impacting the lives of billions of people globally. He also shed light on the environmental impact of election campaigns, emphasizing the need for a more sustainable approach.
The talk tried to make sense of why the general public is not raising climate change-induced deprivations and miseries as an election issue. He enlightened the audience on the meaning and need of climate justice in the context of raising climate justice awareness among the youth.
Prof. Parthasarathy proposed a new policy approach focusing on global cooperation, regional agreements, and the promotion of local activism. The talk highlighted the need to make climate change part of everyday conversations, which are currently restricted to expert discussions and scientific debates.
