On March 12, 2024, the Department of Physics at GITAM School of Science hosted an enlightening talk on ‘Colloidal Photonic Crystals Templates: Physics and Sensing Applications’ by Prof. B. V. R. Tata, a Distinguished Professor of Physics.

During the talk, Prof. Tata delved into the intricacies of colloidal crystal templating, a versatile synthetic technique for constructing periodic structures with nanometer-to-submicrometer features in three dimensions. This technique enables the synthesis of highly ordered porous materials with diverse pore sizes, morphologies, and compositions, contributing to various sensing applications.

Dr. B. V. R. Tata delivering the invited talk

He highlighted the advantages of using protons over electrons, emphasizing that protons are more likely to collide with atoms, resulting in the emission of x-rays. This characteristic makes Particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) more sensitive in detecting specific elements compared to Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) or Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS).

Prof. Tata emphasized the growing potential of colloidal crystal templating, predicting the development of more unique materials and applications in the future. He encouraged mimicking nature in laboratory settings to learn and derive inspiration from its mechanisms.

The session concluded with Prof. Tata addressing queries from faculty members and students. Prof. T. Vishwam, Head of the Department of Physics, expressed gratitude by presenting Prof. Tata with a memento. The talk provided valuable insights into a cutting-edge area of physics and its applications.
