French Open Badminton Tournament to begin today in Paris; 11 shuttlers including PV Sindhu to represent India at event

Eleven shuttlers, including two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, will be representing India at the French Open 2024 badminton tournament which will begin today in Paris.

Sindhu who is returning to this event, will face Canada’s Michelle Li in the opening round of women’s singles. The 28-year-old Sindhu only recently came back from a long injury layoff.

The world No. 1 men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will also be competing in Paris. Satwik-Chirag will take on Malaysia’s Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi in the round of 32.

In the men’s singles category, Indian badminton players will have been handed difficult draws. Priyanshu Rajawat begins his French Open campaign against world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen while Kidambi Srikanth, the 2017 champion, will be up against world No. 14 Chou Tien Chen.

Lakshya Sen is set to face Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama, the 2021 French Open winner, and HS Prannoy, India’s best-ranked singles player at world No. 7, will take on the People’s Republic of China’s Lu Guang Zu, the runners-up from last year’s China Open.

The two Indian women’s doubles pairs of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand and Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Castro will have to face each other in the opening match of the women’s doubles.

The French Open 2024 offers qualifying ranking points to shuttlers for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
