Hyderabad: Celebration of Rukmini Devi Arundale’s 120th Birth Anniversary at GITAM
GITAM School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHS) commemorated the 120th birth anniversary of the illustrious Padma Vibhushan, Rukmini Devi Arundale. The celebration unfolded at the Dance Studio on February 29, 2024, featuring a heartfelt tribute to Rukmini Devi’s invaluable contributions to Bharatanatyam.
During the ceremony, Akshaya Janardhanan, joined by faculty members and students, adorned Rukmini Devi’s photograph with garlands. The participants paid homage to her Bharatanatyam legacy through a performance that included Alarippu, Tillana, and various captivating Bharatanatyam expressions.

The hour-long dance presentation skillfully intertwined tradition with vibrancy, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience. The event stood as a respectful tribute to Rukmini Devi Arundale and her profound impact on the art of Bharatanatyam.
Dr. Lalitha Sindhuri provided insights into Rukmini Devi’s life, while Uma Sreenidhi (BA-Psychology) and Manasvi Bodapati (CSE-AI&ML) supported Akshaya in the performances. The celebration also featured a documentary on Rukmini Devi Arundale, adding depth to the commemoration of this iconic figure in Indian classical dance.
