According to Dr. Vijay Tallapragada, Senior Scientist at NOAA/NWS/NCEP/ Environmental Modeling Center, USA, accurate climate predictions and projections require a collective effort from all disciplines. Dr. Vijay recently delivered an insightful talk on ‘Advances in Numerical Prediction of Weather and Climate: Challenges and Opportunities’ at the GITAM School of Science in Hyderabad, organized by the Department of Physics.

During his talk, Dr. Vijay emphasized the importance of training next-generation scientists to tackle the challenges of accurate climate predictions. He discussed the components of numerical weather prediction models, the trade-offs between speed and accuracy, and the role of NWP in disaster management. Dr. Vijay also shed light on the Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System (HAFS) and its role in improving tropical cyclone predictions for disaster preparedness.

Addressing concerns about the impact of greenhouse effects on the environment, Dr. Vijay highlighted the effects of climate change on phenomena like El Nino and La Nina. He noted the unequivocal warming of the climate system, as evidenced by increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, melting of snow and ice, and rising sea levels. The talk concluded with a Q&A session where Dr. Vijay addressed queries from faculty and students.

Earlier, Prof. T.Vishwam welcomed the guest and Dr. I.V.Subba Reddy, introduced Dr. Vijay and proposed a vote of thanks. The Department of Physics faculty members also felicitated the Senior Scientist for his valuable insights.
