PM Modi to Inaugurate Cochin Shipyard’s New Dry Dock and Ship Repair Facility
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said that the New Dry Dock and International Ship Repair facility of the Cochin Shipyard to be dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow, will further strengthen the country’s position in the global maritime sector.
Addressing a press conference in Kochi, the Minister said the new facilities will be the largest of its kind in the entire South Asia and will help boost the country’s economy. He said, it will make Kochi the most important hub of ship building and ship repair, and will generate over 30,000 jobs directly and indirectly.
He said under the Sagarmala programme, 805 projects were taken up for completion within a period of 20 years, of which 227 have been completed at a cost of 1.47 lakh crore rupees. The programme has helped to improve the capabilities of the country’s port sector significantly.
The Minister said, the government will be investing more than 60,000 crore rupees to create an eco system for river cruises in the country, in a bid to attract more passengers.
