Karnataka: BJP Delegation Urges Govt for Drought-Hit Farmer Compensation
In Karnataka, a BJP delegation led by the leader of the Opposition in legislative Assembly R Ashoka met Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot today, with a request to direct the Congress Government in the state to compensate farmers hard hit by drought. Speaking to the media persons later in Bengaluru, R Ashoka blamed the State Government for ignoring the plight of farmers in the state.
He alleged that 600 farmers have committed suicide and their families are migrating in search of work. He added that even after five months of suffering due to drought, no one from the Government has bothered to compensate the farmers. He further alleged that the promise of 2000 rupees made by the Chief Minister to the farmers is also not fulfilled even after two months.
Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai who was part of the delegation that met the Governor today said that during his tenure, the State Government had released the compensation to the farmers from its coffers without waiting for the relief from the Central Government. He demanded that the state Government must immediately release 100 crore rupees for compensating the farmers in distress due to drought.
