Manipur: IAF airlift 64 dead bodies killed in communal violence to their respective hometowns

In Manipur, dead bodies of 64 people killed in communal violence and remained lying in mortuaries of different hospitals, located in Imphal and Churachandpur districts for the last seven months, were airlifted to their respective hometowns today by the Indian Air Force helicopters.
 
A three-judge Bench of Supreme Court of India presided by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on 28th of last month gave a directive for disposal of bodies of those killed in the Manipur violence since May 3rd and asked the State Government to issue a public notice giving a week to the victim’s relatives to claim the bodies failing which the State shall carry out burial or cremation.
 
According to the directive, the dead bodies of 41 tribals, lying in the mortuaries of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal were airlifted to Churachandpur. Another 19 dead bodies were also airlifted from these hospitals to the hill district Kangpokpi today.
 
On the other hand, 4 dead bodies lying in the mortuary of Churachandpur Medical College were also airlifted to Imphal by IAF Helicopter today.
 
The State Government took up strict security measures and deployed a large number of para-military forces in and around RIMS and JNIMS hospitals in Imphal from last evening. The dead bodies that remained lying in Imphal were transported to the Military Garrison of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) located in Imphal East district in the wee hours today. From there, the IAF Helicopter airlifted the dead bodies to two hill districts.
