Cyclone Maichang hits Andhra Pradesh: Heavy rains, flood terror: Many trains diverted

The Severe Cyclonic Storm “Michaung” that crossed south Andhra Pradesh coast close to Bapatla this afternoon is currently positioned at about 15 km southwest of Baptla and 40 km northeast of Ongole in Andhra Pradesh.

The cyclonic storm is moving at an intensity of 75-85 Kmph gusting to 95 Kmph. The system is likely to maintain the intensity during next 06 hours bringing heavy rainfall to Bapatla, Palnadu, Guntur, East and West Godavari and Konaseema districts. Tirupati and Nellore districts which were battered with heavy rainfall until this afternoon are witnessing gradual reduction in rainfall.

Due to heavy rains caused by the Cyclone, rivers, streams and canals are overflowing across the Tirupati district in Andhra Pradesh. District Superintendent of Police P. Parameshwara Reddy visited the flood-affected areas – Naidupet, Guduru, Sullurpet, and the low-lying areas around the Nellore-Chennai National Highway and supervised the relief efforts being carried out at the field level.

He personally supervised the rescue operations to save the four people trapped in flood in Vakadu Bali Reddy Palem area. Heavy rains coupled with fierce gales have brought down huge trees and power poles on roads and residential areas.

With rains subsiding since this morning, rescue operations are being intensified to remove debris and fallen trees and restore electricity supply.  The district SP suggested people not to come out of their homes unless there is an emergency. 

Due to the flood water on Nellore-Chennai National Highway, diversion measures are being taken at various places to sort out the traffic jam that has stuck traffic for kilometers and make it accessible to the people.

The District SP appealed to the people to call on 100, 112, 80999 99977 in case of emergency and assured prompt action from the police department to provide rescue measures.

Moderate thunderstorms with lightning accompanied with light to moderate rainfall are very likely to occur at many places over VISAKHAPATNAM, VIZIANAGARAM, ANAKAPALLI districts within the next 03 hours. It will be accompanied with squally winds reaching 55 kmph or more.

Light thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at few places over, SRIKAKULAM, PP MANYAM, AS RAJU, KAKINADA, B.R. AMBEDKAR KONASEEMA, EAST GODAVARI-YANAM, WEST GODAVARI, ELURU, NTR, KRISHNA, GUNTUR,,PALNADU, BAPATLA, districts within next 03 hours. It will be accompanied with strong gusty winds reaching 40 kmph or more.
