IMD warns of heavy rain in delta districts of Tamil Nadu due to deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal
The deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal has moved west north westwards with a speed of 7 kmph and lay centered over the same region last evening at around 390 km south east of Chennai. Cyclone Michaung is likely to make a landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Tuesday.
Owing to the depression, the Regional weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rains today in the delta districts. Heavy rains are expected in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Chengalpet, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts Tamil Nadu. Educational institutions in these districts will be closed tomorrow.
Madras University has postponed undergraduate, postgraduate and professional degree exams scheduled for tomorrow. The revised date will be informed later. Anna University has also postponed Engineering semester exams scheduled for tomorrow. It also postponed the distance mode exams scheduled for today and tomorrow.
South Central Railway has cancelled 118 trains till Thursday, including 40 trains between Chennai and destinations in Northern States and those that pass through Chennai and connect to Southern towns. The State Fisheries Department has warned fishermen in Kasimedu against venturing into the sea until Monday. Control rooms have been set up at districts to enable the public to seek help immediately.
