Nepal earthquake: At least 80 killed after 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Jajarkot & Rukum (West) districts

In Nepal, at least 70 people were killed and hundreds injured when a magnitude-6.4 earthquake shook northwestern part of the country late last night, officials said. They have cautioned that the death toll is likely to rise. The earthquake hit near midnight, when people were sleeping.

Suresh Sunar, the chief of Jajarkot district, the epicenter of the earthquake, said that so far, 34 deaths have been confirmed from police and government officials.

In another quake-affected district, 36 deaths were confirmed, with 53 people injured. Hari Prasad Panta, an official in Rukum (West) said that security personnel are being mobilized for the rescue operation.

Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, said he has instructed the Army and national police forces to be mobilized for rescue and relief operations. The Home Ministry of Nepal said, reports of injuries and damage to property are coming from other districts too, including Dailekh, Salyan, and Rolpa districts.

In 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed some 9,000 people and damaged about one million structures, causing many billions of rupees in damage.
