A high-level irrigation expert committee from the Union Jal Shakti Ministry has reached the Lakshmi barrage at Medigadda of Kaleswaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) in Jaishankar Bhupalapally district of Telangana.

The six-member committee lead by National Dam Safety Authority chairman, Anil Jain reached the project site as part of the probe into the partial sinking of a portion of the barrage.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti has ordered a probe into the incident which occurred two days ago. The incident led to temporary closure of the bridge of the barrage across Godavari River that links Telangana with Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district.

Before reaching the barrage, the committee took stock of the situation with state officials in Hyderabad. The committee will look into the reasons for the sinking of the piers of the barrage of the Kaleshwaram project.

The Centre has asked the committee to submit a report after inspecting the barrage and interacting with all stakeholders.

Pillars numbering 15 to 20 of the sixth to eighth blocks of the barrage partially caved in two days ago after pillar number 20 of Block 7 of the barrage had partially sunk.

The Medigadda barrage of the Kaleshwaram Project is 1.6 km-long and the portion which partially sunk is 356 meters from Maharashtra. Engineer in Chief N Venkateswarlu was also present.

The KLIP authorities have started letting out stored water by opening about 57 of the total 85 gates of the barrage to facilitate the technical assessment of the exact cause and damage. Section 144 has been imposed near the barrage.
