NHRC celebrates 30th Foundation Day in New Delhi
The National Human Rights Commission celebrated its 30th Foundation Day today in New Delhi. Addressing the event, former President of India, Ramnath Kovind highlighted the importance of human rights in people’s lives.
Mr. Kovind said that human rights have always been part of India’s ethos. Mr. Kovind highlighted India’s commitment to uphold human rights internationally.
He mentioned the role of Mahatma Gandhi in inspiring leaders around the world. He added that India played an important role in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 and that India is currently a signatory to all the major Human Rights Commissions.
Mr. Kovind said that the Indian government goes the extra mile in protecting people’s rights through both administrative and legislative efforts. He highlighted key policy and legal changes such as expansion of the Right to Life and the abolishment of Triple Talaq.
Speaking NHRC chairperson Arun Kumar Mishra talked about challenges faced by the NHRC and how people as individuals can contribute.
