International Day of Girl Child celebrates across the country

Today is International Day of the Girl Child. This day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.  The theme this year is – Invest in Girls’ Rights- Our Leadership, Our Well-being.
 
Responding to girls’ calls for change, the global community must move beyond reaffirming commitments and invest boldly in the action needed to make that change.

On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

Under various government schemes such as the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, India has increased awareness towards valuing the girl child. According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Sex Ratio at Birth at National level improved significantly in recent years. Enrolment of Girls in secondary education has also increased.
 
The Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 is an Integrated Nutrition Support Programme. It seeks to address the challenges of malnutrition in children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers through a strategic shift in nutrition content.

Achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment is integral to each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
