Hyderabad: GITAMites sensitized ‘Gender neutrality’
On September 26th and 28th, 2023, Vastranova, The wave, The Debate Society, and Ethos the student clubs of GITAM Deemed to be University, Hyderabad, organized a two-day event titled ‘Beyond Binary – Embracing Gender Neutrality.’ The event aimed to introduce the concept of gender neutrality to the students.
In recent years, gender neutrality has gained significant attention and recognition. In 2019, Merriam-Webster declared the non-binary pronoun ‘they’ as the word of the year, highlighting the growing awareness surrounding gender-neutral language and its implications. Since then, various workplaces, brands, and even Indian cinema have contributed to mainstreaming the concept.
According to gender experts, addressing individuals using the pronouns they determine for themselves is crucial for human dignity. It allows everyone to acknowledge and celebrate the multiple intersecting identities found among people. As a result, a handful of progressive workplaces in India have embraced gender inclusivity by adopting gender-neutral pronouns such as they, them, and theirs. Additionally, sharing one’s pronouns on social media has become a way to show support for trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals.
GITAM Deemed to be University, Hyderabad, takes pride in fostering a progressive and inclusive environment for its students. By organizing events like ‘Beyond Binary – Embracing Gender Neutrality,’ the university aims to empower its students with knowledge and awareness about important social issues.
