IMD: Country receives over 162 MM of rainfall in August this year

The country received over 162 millimetres of rainfall in August this year, which is 36 per cent less than its Long Period Average of around 255 millimetres.

The India Meteorological Department said, rainfall over all India was lowest since 1901 against previous record of 191.2 mm in 2005.

The weather office said, that during August this year, the country experienced extremely heavy rainfall events mainly over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Odisha and East Madhya Pradesh.

IMD has also said that monthly rainfall for September over the country as a whole is most likely to be normal. Met department has forecast normal to above normal rainfall over many areas of northeast India, adjoining east India, foothills of the Himalayas, and some areas of east-central and south peninsular India. Below-normal rainfall is most likely over most areas of the remaining parts of the country.
