The Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has said that the State will seek to reduce the amount of Cauvery water released to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. He said, they will try to make the Supreme Court understand the situation prevailing in his state.

Tamil Nadu has urged the Apex Court to direct Karnataka to ensure the release of the stipulated 36.76 thousand million cubic feet of water for the month of September 2023, as per the Cauvery Tribunal award.

The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) on 29th August 2023 directed Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for the next 15 days. Karnataka had agreed to give 3,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu citing a deficit in rainfall this year.
