Hyderabad: PXRD inaugurated at GITAM; Dr. JARP Sarma explained its applications
The powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD) lab was inaugurated at the School of Science, GITAM Deemed to be University, Hyderabad on 16th August 2023, and sponsored by Crystallography in India. Dr. JARP Sarma, CEO, Keminntek, Hyderabad along with Dr. Pratap Kollu, Assistant Professor, University of Hyderabad inaugurated the facility and participated in a one-day National Workshop on ‘Powder X-Ray Diffraction and its applications’.
In his chief guest speech, Dr. Sarma explained the importance of PXRD and the safety precautions. X-Ray has a wide range of uses, where it can be used in different applications, it plays a very important role, and its diffraction gives a lot more inside view for materials, he explained. X-Ray powder spectrum is a 2D chap, like ECG, on one side we have 2 teta values and the intensity, he said.
The source on which you are targeting electron beam, based on the source the x-rays will come out, Dr. Sarma narrated. While telling about safety, he cautioned that make sure the door is closed when the beam is on and you have to pass through the cool water continuously to cool the source. If anyone exposes the x-ray spark, it might cause cancer also, he added.
The guest of honor Dr. Pratap also explained about PXRD’s applications and precautions while using it.
Earlier, Prof. Rambabu Gundla, Chair Persons of the workshop brief about the background to get PXRD and Dr. Gousia Begum, Head, Department of Chemistry expressed the happiness for getting a great opportunity for research and a good research environment. Dr. M.Surendra Babu, Convenor, briefed about the objective of the workshop, Dr. Naresh Kumar Katari and Dr. Uma Devi moderated the event.
