‘The proposition of a project proposal is very important. The intention may be very good, but how you are positioning it? You should be articulate to defend your proposal in terms of positioning, thinking process, etc’ said Dr. Mohammad Aslam, Consultant (DBT-ILS) and Former Advisor, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

He delivered an invited talk on ‘DBT’s Extramural Research Funding System: Funding Opportunities for Research and Development (R&D)’ GITAM Deemed to be University, Hyderabad on 11th July 2023.

The expert committee can judge a proposal after reading not only the title and the core objectives, what feasibility is and what are the chances, and how the investigator is defining the research problem, Dr. Aslam told.

He explained that the DBT or any funding agencies are first invited to the letter of intent. The criteria used for the first level of screening is to see the publication of the investigator and his CV. Based on the letter of intent the agencies can find if is it worth developing into a full proposal, then they can invite you for a presentation.

Today Biotechnology itself is a multi-disciplinary subject. Bio-Physics, Physics is required there. Chemistry is the backbone of all science. Chemistry and Physics are everywhere. Advanced biomaterial requires the measuring style strength of biomaterial. DBT is considering the proposals from even mechanical engineering, but they should associate with somebody who can work on biological material, Dr. Aslam made it clear.

Dr. Aslam advised that any institute should have its own mechanism for generating the projects. They should have more idea-generation meetings internally. Different departments come together to discuss and think ideas present themselves and find a partner etc.

Earlier, Dr. Ganapathy, Deputy Director, R&D Center introduced the guest and Dr. Dattatri K.Nagesha proposed the vote of thanks. The faculty from various departments, those who are willing to take up R&D projects, participated in the interactive session.
