Hyderabad: GITAM celebrates National Statistics Day
The National Statistical System was founded by Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, whose birthday is marked as Statistics Day on June 29 every year to honor his essential contribution.
Dr. G.S.R.Murthy, Indian Statistical Institute, Hyderabad graced as the chief guest on the occasion of ‘National Statistics Day’ virtually celebrated at GITAM Deemed to be University, Hyderabad on 29 June 2023, by the Department of Mathematics.
Dr. Murthy presented an important problem known as Cutting Stock Problem. This problem has numerous applications in various decision-making problems, and one important application was presented to motivate young students. This lecture aimed to lure students towards the most fascinating and vital subject: Mathematical Programming for Optimal Decision Making.
Prof. Dattatri K.Nagesha, Principal, School of Science presided over the session. Dr. D.Mallikarjuna Reddy, Dr K. Anil Kumar, student team Shiva & Adhiti coordinated the event. Dr. M.Reza, Head, Department of Mathematics; Prof. B.M.Naidu, other faculty and students participated in this online celebration.
About Mahalanobis:
Indian scientist and statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis served on the first Planning Commission of free India. He is also famous for formulating a big sample survey and figuring out the Mahalanobis distance. He established the Indian Institute of Statistics and contributed to the field of anthropometry. He has won various honours for his work in statistics, including the OBE, FNA, FASc, and FRS.
