India working on a mission mode to phase out use of petrol and diesel vehicles: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari today said that he is working on a mission mode to phase out the use of petrol and diesel vehicles from India. Addressing the Navbharat environment conclave and award ceremony in Mumbai this evening,
Mr. Gadkari said it is sad to note that vehicular pollution contributes 40 percent of the total pollution reported in our country. Stating that India’s import crude oil import bill stands at 16 lakh crore rupees annually, Mr. Gadkari said use of fossil fuels is a challenge for the economy as well as the environment.
Mr. Gadkari added that numerous innovations are also taking place across the length and breadth of the country to explore green fuels like hydrogen and ethanol. Mr. Gadkari said Indian farmers can also contribute to this mission by processing biomass into biofuels.
Citing examples of innovations like ethanol gas stove by Indian Oil, use of bio aviation fuel, bamboo crash barriers and use of waste material and rubber powder generated from old tyres in road construction, Mr. Gadkari said it is heartening to see efforts to convert waste to wealth and knowledge to wealth.
