Parshottam Rupala urges state Govt’s to join hands with centre to take country’s fisheries sector forward

Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala today urged the state governments to join hands with the centre to take the country’s fisheries sector further forward.

He was addressing a function at Kasargod, held as part of the seventh phase of the Sagar Parikrama programme, covering Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Mr Rupala said a two-day meeting of state fisheries ministers will be convened soon at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu, to chalk out various measures to take the sector forward.


He also called upon the state governments to bring more fishermen within the purview of Kisan Credit Cards, which will provide them with institutional credit facilities. He said the government is working on improving marketing linkages and evolving an insurance scheme for the benefit of fishers.

Mr Rupla, along with Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Dr L Murugan interacted with fishermen and distributed assistance, awards and certificates to the beneficiaries of PM Matsaya Sampada Yojana.

Suvarna Chandrapparagari, Chief Executive, National Fisheries Development Board grace the occasion of Sagar Parikrama Yatra Phase-VII.

Sagar Parikrama is a program reflecting the far-reaching policy and strategy of the Government leading to the direct interaction with fishers and fish farmers and other stakeholders to understand the issues of coastal areas and problems related to fishermen. Sagar Parikrama program during Phase I to Phase VI have brought massive changes in the development strategy of fishermen and have given a deep insight into the understanding the problems of fishermen.

Certainly, Sagar Parikrama Phase VII program commenced by Shri Saji Cheriyan, Minister of Fisheries, Government of Kerala, Dr. Suvarna Chandrapparagari, Chief Executive, National Fisheries Development Board, and other dignitaries at Madakkara fishing harbour. Dr Suvarna Chandrapparagari, CE, NFDB informed about the projects sanctioned such as upgradation of fishing harbour centre and received various applications from beneficiaries to strengthen the fisheries ecosystem. Dignitaries have also visited Mussle Culture site at Pallikara.
