Visakhapatnam: A ten-year-old giraffe (female) died in Indira Gandhi Zoological Park
With immense grief, it is informed that the female Giraffe named May, aged about 10 years died on May 17 was brought from Negera Zoo, Malaysia to Vizag Zoo in 2013 at the age of 4 months. The cause of death is due to Chronic Metritis & pneumonia as per the Postmortem report submitted by the Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, IGZP, Visakhapatnam.
The animal was under continuous treatment for over past three months and the Zoo authorities have made every possible effort to treat the animal by consulting various wildlife experts from other zoos.
But, unfortunately, the animal was losing its body condition since past 2-3 weeks and today morning, we lost her. She was an important animal to the Vizag Zoo and its visitors and this has created a huge gap in our animal family. Generally, the average lifespan of a Giraffe is around 20-25 years.
