Govt sets target to increase highways network to 2 lakh kms by 2025

As the Narendra Modi Government is completing nine years in office this month, Aakashwani News is bringing a series of special stories on the initiatives taken by the government. Today, we take a look at pace of construction of National Highways in the country.
   
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and its implementing agencies have undertaken multiple initiatives to augment the capacity of the National Highways infrastructure in the country.

National Highways play a very important role in the economic and social development of the country by enabling efficient movement of freight and passengers and improving access to market.
 
The construction of National Highways has witnessed around 48 percent growth in the last nine years and its total length in the country has gone up to nearly 1.47 lakh klilometers against 98,000 kilometres in 2014-15. Further, the government has set a target to increase the highways network to two lakh kilometers by 2025. Few days ago in Rajasthan, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation projects worth over 5,500 crore rupees.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister said that along with taking roads to villages, the Central government is connecting cities with modern highways.
 
The pace of National Highways construction has also increased due to the systematic push through corridor-based National Highway development approach. Earlier the pace of  National Highways’ construction was about 12 kilometers per day which has increased to  38  kilometers per day at present.
